The other day I woke up engorged. It was painful. The discomfort persisted. Especially on the right side. Enter in chills, sweats, fever and overall malaise. I needed to nipple it nip it in the bud before it got worse. So I asked mommy friends about their experiences with breastfeeding pain and checked out two of my favourite online resources: Kelly Mom and Mama Natural.
The high fever, chills & aching pointed towards mastitis. Kelly Mom has an excellent and informative article on plugged ducts and mastitis with a list of symptoms, causes, treatments and references. You can find it here. Since it was late at night, I decided to have a long warm bath, massage and hand express for some relief and go to bed. I continued to nurse my baby as usual.
In the morning my fever was gone but the pain in my right breast and engorgement remained. If my fever had still been present or if it came back, I would have connected with my healthcare provider. Listen to your body! Infections can be serious both for you and for baby.
Mama Natural has a DIY natural remedy for a blocked milk duct and I thought I’d give some of it a try. You can find her full natural treatment here.
This is what I did:
- long warm bath, massage and hand express
- 2 drops of lavender essential oil mixed with coconut oil massaged onto affected breast with special attention to the sore spot
- once oil is absorbed, apply thinly sliced organic potatoes around breast, cover with bra to hold in place
- leave on for at least an hour
Weird, right!? But, yay! It worked for me. Luckily my breastfeeding pain and discomfort were short lived and it didn’t turn into a major infection. Have you experienced blocked milk ducts or mastitis? What worked for you?
